Everybody’s happy—the expatriates, the inpatriates, and the CEO
Inpatriate & Expatriate Services for Companies
Start with a good plan, grounded in your business strategy and your goals for your international business. Start with this Top 10 list, and work your way down to the details:
Top 10 Tasks for Employers
(don’t worry, we help)
- Figure out how you will structure your presence in the new country. It will impact your tax exposure in that nation; you’ll want to weigh carefully if you should make a permanent establishment.
- Understand the tax treaties of the countries in which you’re doing business. So you pay what you owe, but not more (and definitely not double!)
- Calculate your total costs. They can extend far beyond an extra executive bonus and a little help with the kids’ tuition. Do the math; what can you realistically afford against the ROI you expect?
- Make the commitment to keep your employees whole. If you financially penalize employees for going overseas, or traveling to you, you may be signing up for bigger problems. Recruiting expatriates and inpatriates is tough enough; treat them fairly.
- Establish an equalization policy and a compensation policy. Standardize the way you calculate “keeping those employees whole.” Put your policies in writing, keep them up-to-date.
- Set up smart payroll systems. From currency to withholding, it pays to have a payroll operation familiar with international issues.
- Get smart about social security issues. Should your employees, and you, pay taxes here or there? What’s the better deal? How will they collect? How does totalization work?
- Navigate retirement investing. Does a 401(k) or 403(b) make sense for expatriate or inpatriate employees, or are there better options?
- Take advantage of foreign tax credits. You earned them, make sure you get them.
- Get your people the help they need with living abroad. Expatriates and inpatriates bring special talents—hard to find, hard to replace. Make their duty rewarding by providing the help they need with everyday living, from visas to opposite-side driving lessons to schools to tax returns.
